POCC 2019 in Seattle
Last week, seven FSS staff, Kim, Ami, Joanie, Kerryn, Sarah T., Chela, and Tia attended this years’ National Association of Independent School, People of Color Conference.
The purpose of POCC is to provide space for people of color in independent schools to connect, commune, and build new skills and capacities that support and advance their work.
“This years’ theme was ‘1619. 2019. Before, Beyond. Amplifying Our Intelligence to Liberate, Co-create, and thrive’ we join in an international commemoration of the 400 years since the first British ship carrying captured Angolans arrived in North America, initiating enslavement of black African people. The theme also pays homage to the indigenous cultures and people present in North America before 1619. It is a reminder that black and indigenous history did not begin with atrocity, but with rich cultures, community, and achievements that helped build this nation and world” (POCC Program Beyond 2019).
Kerryn and Kim presented at this years’ POCC conference. Kim, in collaboration with the Angela Garcia (Head of Friends Community School), Nicole DuFauchard (Head of Advent School), and Courtney Marting (Lower School Head at the Hawken School) Our presentation was entitled, Building Blocks of Resilient Female Leaders of Color.
Kerryn, in collaboration with James Greenwood (St. Paul’s School), Jaleesa Anseim (Atrium School), Tina Fox and Connie Yepez (Park School) presented a workshop, entitled, Expanding Affinity Potential: Affinity Groups in Elementary, Middle and Early Childhood Education.
We attended a variety of workshops, and heard excellent speakers, and had the opportunity to spend time thinking about how we support DEI work at FSS.
