Fayerweather’s physical education program encourages children to find their own level of commitment and excellence. Activities that build coordination, promote exercise and develop sportsmanship are key elements of the curriculum. Children play both noncompetitive games and traditional team sports.

  • Kindergarten - Grade 2

    In Kindergarten through second grades, curriculum emphasizes the development of fundamental motor skills. Students are exposed to a variety of activities in which they are able to explore, problem solve and socialize while playing. Specific activities include movement and body awareness, cooperative games and tumbling. Free exploration time, in which students can choose activities or equipment, is part of each class. In addition, first and second graders play tag and relay games, practice dribbling and running, play floor hockey, soccer and use the climbing wall.
     
  • Grades 3 & 4

    The third and fourth grade curriculum emphasizes further development and enhancement of gross motor skills. Students play modified lead-up games and practice fundamental sports skills. Specific activities include: non-competitive games, games from other cultures, and skill building with equipment such as scooters, jump ropes and hoops. Students play soccer, floor hockey, basketball, baseball, flag football, volleyball and use the climbing wall. In addition, each student has a “choice day” in which they may choose an activity for a portion of the period.
     
  • Grades 5 & 6

    The fifth and sixth grade curriculum emphasizes skill strengthening and further understanding of different sports and games. Students work on skills, rules and fitness. Activities include, non-competitive games, fitness activities, gymnastics, and the climbing wall. Soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, lacrosse and baseball are played as intramural and mini-tournaments through the year. In addition, each student has a “choice day” in which they may choose an activity for a portion of the period.
  • Grades 7 & 8

    In seventh and eighth grades, students work towards refinement of skills and playing specific sports by their traditional rules. Sports and games offered are soccer, flag football, floor hockey, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse and baseball. Mini-tournaments and intramurals offer extended practice and playing time for students.

    Fayerweather offers Interscholastic soccer, basketball and Ultimate Frisbee for students in grades 5-8. Intramural soccer and basketball classes are available for younger students. Parkour is also offered for the middle grades.
