The Younger Extended Day program (YED) is offered for PreK through second grade. We provide a warm and friendly environment for our youngest students as they transition to the extended part of their school day. The afternoon begins with a snack and seasonal outdoor play in our sandbox, riding tricycles, or drawing with sidewalk chalk. Afterwards, our Extended Day teachers open up new spaces and provide ample opportunity for student-led creativity, purposeful imaginative play, and deepening connections between peers. In our Multipurpose Room (MPR), students dive into the Creation Station to make projects out of recycled materials, open a pizza parlor using our play kitchen, learn a new board or card game, or even try sewing or knitting for the first time. If students need to get more energy out, they might remain outside and play on our play structures or go to the Gym to play active games or build forts. Towards the end of a busy afternoon, our students can be found reading a story or coloring with one of our teachers in the library before their caregivers pick them up.
Middle Extended Day
The Middle Extended Day program (MED) focuses on providing a balance of structure and free choice for our 3rd and 4th grade students. As students progress through the program they are introduced to more options for structuring their after school time. Students partake in snack and outdoor free time, and also have the space for Homework Club. MED teachers offer an exciting selection of activities and clubs that the students can choose to participate in, and also leave the space for students to follow their own initiatives in a safe and fun environment. Sports, art, drama, music, Club Time, and a whole lot more.
Older Extended Day
The Older Extended Day program (OED) is offered for students in third through eighth grade. OED provides an exciting experience driven by student choice that allows students the freedom to structure their afternoon based on individual interests and needs. Time and space is given for students to complete their homework while still providing ample opportunity to engage in other activities -- some activities are implemented by their Extended Day teachers and others are student-led with the support and encouragement of our staff. An afternoon in OED always begins with a snack and seasonal outside play in the Big Yard. You’ll see kids kicking around a soccer ball or throwing a frisbee among friends before heading into the Library to begin the next portion of the afternoon. In the Library, students get started on homework assignments, read, play chess, draw, play a board game, or just wind down with some social time among friends. As we approach the next portion of the afternoon, kids enter the Gym to shoot hoops, build forts, or participate in a teacher-led game of banana tag, scatter dodgeball, and more! Through the combination of unique activity selections and relaxing downtime, we strive to create a fun and stimulating environment that is different from the regular school day but still builds social skills and sparks imagination.
Extra Curricular Programs
In addition to the regular Extended Day program, there are a range of extracurricular activities offered seasonally throughout the school year. These include our interscholastic sports teams and sports classes, various clubs and classes led by both students and staff, STEM classes, art classes, theatre offerings, and more! Both Extended Day students and FSS students not enrolled in Extended Day may participate in these programs.
