• Grades 1 & 2

  In first and second grades, our goal is for students to see science as a way of asking questions and seeking answers through the study and exploration of physical and life sciences. Experiments are born out of children’s natural curiosity, as well as from teacher directed queries to teach specific concepts or vocabulary. Some topics are studied each year, while others rise out of children’s own questions. Within each topic, students are given ample opportunities to explore freely. In the physical sciences, they build and experiment with gears, pendulums, water and ramps as a way to understand how things work. They make predictions and test theories. In the life sciences, children explore the natural world through growing plants and observing and studying animals. 

• Grades 3 & 4

  In third and fourth grades, students develop skills in scientific method, data collection, problem solving, effective communication, note taking, experiment design and engineering. They learn new vocabulary, research topics and write reports. Measuring, graphing and comparing are supported by work in math classes while projects and group presentations closely integrate the arts.
  
  

  This is a time for students to further develop their understanding and appreciation of the role of science. Through hands-on investigations and experiments, they practice the skills integral to the scientific process. These include predicting and hypothesizing, creating and using models, making detailed observations, classifying and categorizing, questioning and researching.
