Extended Day Program

Emily Grove, Director of Extended Day
How integral is the Extended Day experience for our Fayerweather students? Well, what if I told you that during November break our team received video evidence of two siblings playing “Extended Day” at home? Complete with walkie-talkie communication:
“We have two kids who want to come play in the big yard. Do you have space?”
“Yupp! They can come! Over!”
“Sadie is being picked up at the side door. Sadie at the side door.”
“Sadie is asking for 5 more minutes. Is that okay with her mom?”
“Okay! 5 more minutes!”

Needless to say, it made our day. Every afternoon in Extended Day, after we’ve all had snack, kids have the opportunity to unwind, socialize, create, energize, and be a part of a vibrant selection of activities. And let me tell you, these kids are pros at making the most out of their afternoon.

Our Younger Extended Day (YED) students are big on crafting. They love to spend their afternoon free drawing, creating melty bead art, making jewelry, and sewing. Believe me, if you have a YED student, you definitely have a few melty bead projects at home. When they aren’t crafting, many of our students host their own soccer games in the Big Yard or the gym. I don’t know if it was all of the buzz about the World Cup or Coach Jr. and Coach Izaak’s Soccer Skills program – but the kids can’t get enough of it!

Our Middle Extended Day (MED) and Older Extended Day (OED) students have been extremely helpful with including YED students in their afterschool activities. Kids of all ages participate in Doctor Dodgeball and other games in the gym. Sometimes we’ll have fashion shows with our costume stock, or make our own hair & nail salon for an eager clientele. To support students with homework, Alex has opened up a study space for kids in grades 3 and up to work on assignments together.

We’ve introduced a few new Extracurricular programs this year as well as brought back some all-time favorites. In the fall, Aaron’s Gamers Guild has students hosting Dungeons & Dragons campaigns for their friends. It’s an excellent leadership opportunity for the students and we hope to have it back for the spring! Each semester we have Art Studio Club with Iris. Students have the chance to work on projects of their choice while Iris supports them with their creative vision. This winter, we offered a bunch of new programs. Curious Composers with Chloe, Novel Writing with Connie, and Comic Book Creation with Lara are newly underway! Our returning winter programs, The Unit Play and the 5-8 Basketball team have been practicing hard multiple times a week.

We can’t wait to see what the rest of the school year has in store. As always, if you have any questions about our Extended Day or Extracurricular Programs, please reach out to Emily (emily@fayerweather.org).
