Education as Freedom at Fayerweather Street School

Kim Ridley, Head of School
At Fayerweather, we have always believed that education must prepare students for the future and the world they live in today. Our graduates step forward as confident learners and leaders—clear-eyed, self-aware, and ready to engage with the complexities of our time.

Now, more than ever, the world needs critical thinkers, compassionate leaders, and courageous changemakers. Throughout history, forces have sought to restrict progress—curtailing access, limiting rights, and fostering division. But history also teaches us that knowledge is one of the most enduring forms of freedom and resistance.

This is why we embrace a simple but powerful truth: Education is our activism. Bell Hooks captured it best when she wrote, “Education is the practice of freedom.” At Fayerweather, learning goes beyond mastering subjects—it is about cultivating curiosity, challenging injustice, expanding imagination, and engaging in meaningful discourse. Our curriculum is designed to foster deep thinking, respect for differences, and the confidence to stand firm in one's beliefs while remaining open to growth.
The true battleground is not in political arenas but in the spaces where young minds are shaped. Our mission calls us to prioritize joy in learning, the strength of community, and an education that engages with the themes and issues of our time. In doing so, we prepare students not only to navigate the world but to shape it.

As we approach six decades of progressive education, Fayerweather’s mission has never been more relevant. In uncertain times, I find hope in the unwavering dedication of this community—educators, families, and students alike—who believe in the power of education to transform lives and build a more just world. This work is urgent, necessary, and deeply meaningful. Together, we remain resolute in that mission.
