Community Statement Regarding Breonna Taylor

The Fayerweather Faculty and Staff
Dear Fayerweather Community,

Last week, as many of you are no doubt aware, the decision was made not to indict any of the officers involved in killing Breonna Taylor. This decision has caused anger, sadness, outrage, and was also not surprising for many.
As a school dedicated to working on social justice and anti-racism, we feel it is our responsibility to acknowledge events like these when they occur, especially when they are a part of so many peoples’ awareness. At the same time, we recognize that injustices like this are happening constantly, often out of the public eye. This is not meant to minimize what happened, but rather to highlight the fact that we are working against a system that is pervasive and deeply embedded in our society, and extends far beyond the events we see in the news.

We want to reiterate that we are committed to working with our students, our staff, and our families to support this work in both direct and indirect ways. Over the coming weeks, we will be sending out more information about some of the initiatives we are implementing this year, and letting you all know of structured opportunities to connect around this anti-racist work.

In the meantime, if you or your children have thoughts or questions you would like to share with us, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are planning events and conversations, and are also always open and receptive to talking when something comes up.

Thank you all so much for being a part of our community, and for helping us live our mission.
