Graduation 2022 - Kim Ridley's Remarks

On behalf of the 8th Grade Class, teachers, staff, administrators, the Board of Directors, the Board Chair, Courtney Quinn, Parents, and friends of Fayerweather Street School. Welcome to this celebration of the learning, growth, and accomplishments of our 8th-grade students. I love feeling the excitement and promise of this moment. I want you to think about the word “choice.” Choice is a concept that we deeply believe in and is a tenet of progressive education. You often might hear us say, “we want students to have choices in their learning.”
Today I want you to consider how you will think about the choices you will make as you leave the familiarity of FSS and embark on your new journeys. There are several definitions of the word “Choice” or “Choices.” I much prefer this definition, which is “A range of possibilities from which one or more may be selected…” The reason why I like this definition is that it implies that complexity is embedded in the choices we make. And, of course, one cannot separate choices from impact, consequences, or outcomes. Every choice I make as a human being, partner, parent, friend, and HOS creates an impact—something happens as a result; someone is affected by my choice—and I have to ask myself, what do I want my impact to be?

Now, and moving into the summer, I want you to consider the values you have learned here at FSS; values such as empathy, equity, curiosity, resourcefulness, self-compassion, gratitude, and the importance of what it means to feel a sense of belonging and connection. My hope for you is the foundation and values you learned here will guide you in the choices you make and that you are continuously aware of how your choices affect your life and the lives of others who you will meet.

I will share with you for the last time my favorite poem, Blessings of the Boats by Lucille Clifton, from the book, Healing the Divide–Poems of Kindness and Connection.

may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding
carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love your back     may you
open your eyes to water
water waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this to that

This is not a goodbye, but until we meet again!
