FSS Extended Day Back in Action!

Andrew Campion, Director of Marketing and Communications
Fayerweather’s Extended Day program has been a staple of our programming for many years. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we were forced to forgo these experiences for over a year. This year, however, we are thrilled to see the return of many familiar Extended Day offerings, as well as some exciting new additions.

Fayerweather’s curriculum emphasizes a spirit of exploration and creative problem solving by providing opportunities to learn from direct experiences. The Extended Day program emphasizes these principles across all grade and age levels. In the younger grades, students begin their afternoon by sharing thoughts and ideas before starting experiences through exploration and science, art and acting, or social justice and activism.
The Nature Detectives venture outdoors to Fresh Pond to explore the different flora and fauna of the surrounding local community while identifying and asking questions about biology and ecology. The Actor’s Toolbox program shifts learning back towards the self as students explore the body and voice through storytelling, acting exercises, and games. The return of the student-led Activism Club provides learners with the opportunity to ask big questions and delve into topics around social and climate justice.

These are just a sampling of the programs happening throughout the fall. During the first week of Extended Day, students explored movement and mindfulness through Yoga, creativity through art with Iris, teamwork through Soccer Skills, and confidence through Parkour in the Big Yard.

Older grade levels have opportunities to hone their proficiencies and comprehension in different fields. The Extended Day Band, led by Plant Operations Manager Rob Lee, gives a first-hand experience playing music and helps grow confidence by culminating in a public performance. The Antiracist Activism, led by current parent Meredith Moore, dives deeper into social and racial justice topics by looking at real-world examples of what is happening in different communities around the US.

Having the entire school community back in our hallways and classrooms has been a privilege. Seeing the learning continue throughout the whole day in our Extended Day program has been a delight for the entire community. All of this has been made possible by Director of Extended Day, Emily Grove, and her team of dedicated staff:

  • Ingleed Auguste - Older Extended Day
  • Alex Arlos - Older & Middle Extended Day
  • Lara Williams - Middle Extended Day
  • Carmencita Lowe - Younger Extended Day
  • Joanie Grisham - Younger Extended Day
  • Jay Connolly - Younger Extended Day
  • Surrey Houlker - Younger Extended Day
