Best Beaks

A few weeks ago we learned why beaks are shaped differently and what the different shaped beaks are used for. Today we got a chance to try out some tools meant to simulate different beak shapes. Students matched different birds with what they ate and then found the best tool for the job. After all of the "beaks" were matched to the right bird and the right food source students recorded their work. 

 

This activity required not only knowledge of bird biology and diet but also the ability to work in a team and think like a scientist. We talked about how scientists collaborate, make decisions, try out ideas, and are open to exploring different solutions. 

 

The students rose to the occasion and worked together efficiently, accurately and with great communication.
