Importance of Learning In Community

Kim Ridley, Head of School
Learning in a diverse community approximating the outside world is essential to creating societies concerned about growing people's capacity to care about justice and humanity. The process of humanizing ourselves to each other starts with education. Creating learning opportunities that make the connective tissue between us more visible is foundational for a responsive and thoughtful school experience.  How are we making our beliefs and values visible to ourselves and others interested in joining Fayerweather?

We practice balancing what is essential for students/adults to learn while recognizing the strengths, challenges, and needs that characterize who we are as individuals within a larger community.  Questions such as, who fits into the FSS community, is on the periphery, and is standing on the outside? How do we know? We ask these questions in team meetings, staff meetings, surveys, parking lots, and All School Meetings. Embedded in a strong school community are tensions, such as differences of opinions and social positions that often frame our experience inside and outside FSS; for example,  a parent's disappointment with how their child is responding to school; a long email from a parent who doesn’t feel heard; a staff member who feels overwhelmed; or a student demanding our attention.  All of these situations create important feedback loops, though sometimes difficult to hear or even figure out, yet we know will improve the quality of the educational experience we offer. I call this learning in community.

As these scenarios and situations present themselves, I ask myself,  what words or actions can create a sense of connection and belonging?  Whatever decisions or actions are taken, do they align with the overall purpose and mission of Fayerweather Street School?  The mission reflects our shared vision, values, and collective purpose for being here. The Board of Directors led a process to update our mission statement. It has taken the board about two years, through COVID, and many conversations, to complete this process. This mission is similar to the current mission but clearly spells out who we are and how we have grown since the last writing of the mission statement.  The language is updated, and our ideals and purpose re-invigorated. Soon we will be sharing our new mission.  You will have the opportunity to think about what the new mission means to you and your family. My hope is that you will hold us accountable for ensuring that our words, actions, and decisions reflect who we say we are. In this world of mixed-up emotions and competing values, it feels exhilarating to lead a mission-based school community that knows what and who it is.

In partnership,
Kim
