Young children have an innate curiosity about the world around them. Science naturally taps into this interest through exploration and discovery. In their classrooms, science is child-centered and activity-oriented, providing a variety of experiences to be explored at each child's own time and pace. Children are encouraged to observe carefully, note similarities and differences, make and test predictions and interact with one another, through the scientific process.

  • PreK

In the fall, PreK children observe monarch caterpillars munching on milkweed and silkworms feeding on mulberry leaves. Over the ensuing weeks, the class observes and records the metamorphosis process by drawing pictures, making clay models and creating miniature books on life cycles. Fall in New England readily lends itself to outdoor exploration of seasonal change, while indoors, children watch a pumpkin decompose in a large tank noting daily progression. Composting is an important commitment in our school and PreK takes an active role by raising worms used in the compost process! Springtime finds PreK planting in the school-wide learning garden and, also, in their own growing space outside the classroom. Children also learn and explore the world of physics. In the block corner, children discover engineering by creating sturdy structures with ramps for cars. They also investigate the properties of sink and float in the indoor water table.
  • Kindergarten

Building on children’s natural interests and curiosities, Kindergarteners learn about the scientific process of observation, theory building, testing, and recording. Earth, life and physical science take center stage, as children explore the sun, earth and moon, weather and the seasons, along with animals, plants, biomes and habitats. Properties of common materials are investigated. Children build ramps and pulleys and create chain reactions while discovering the engineering process.
