The Younger Afterschool program (YAS) is offered for PreK through second grade. We provide a warm and friendly environment for our youngest students as they transition to the extended part of their school day. Children gather from four different classrooms creating the YAS community. The afternoon begins with time outdoors followed by snack and a community building meeting. During this time, children have an opportunity to share thoughts and ideas, followed by an introduction to and related story about the special project of the week. Special projects range from art to science and nature study and have included sculpture and weaving to dissecting owl pellets and identifying animal paw prints. Children may opt for the special project or choose from a wide array of other activities such as dress-up, manipulatives, games, writing/drawing table and quiet reading.
The Older Afterschool program (OAS) provides an exciting student driven experience that allows students freedom to structure their afternoon based on individual interests and needs. Time and space is provided for students to complete their homework while still providing ample time to engage in other activities. OAS teachers offer a variety of activities from sports, drama, art, cooking, dance and music. Through the combination of unique activity choices and relaxing downtime, we strive to create a fun and stimulating environment that is different from the regular school day.
In addition to the regular Afterschool program, there are a range of enrichment activities offered throughout the school year. These include sports teams and clubs, science, math and engineering classes. Both Afterschool students and other FSS students may participate in these programs.
