The Horizon Fund is a program, created in May 2007, intended to support a range
of professional enrichment opportunities for eligible FSS faculty and staff. All
faculty and staff with four years of full-time service to Fayerweather (or equivalent),
and who will be returning the following academic year, are eligible to apply. The
program serves two main functions. First, it supplements FSS’s current professional
development program by funding projects that exceed the scope (in terms of money
and/or time) of that program. Second, while supplanting the existing sabbatical
policy, it offers a sense of reward for service and dedication due to the significant
nature of the projects underwritten. The Horizon Fund will allow staff to grow,
learn, and be renewed in ways previously thought to be out of reach. With this fund,
we envision sending our Pre-K through 2nd grade teachers to such places as Italy
to attend world renowned Reggio Emilia workshops on early childhood development.
Closer to home, training may include a week at EdVenture where teachers learn to
integrate science into their regular curriculum or implement a case study method
as taught at Tufts University’s Wright Center. As the first recipients of Horizon
Fund support, our 5th and 6th grade teachers visited South Africa as part of a two
week intensive seminar that dovetails with their middle passage curriculum.
