In our youngest grades, Music is taught through Dalcroze-based singing, movement
and improvisation. Hands-on exploration includes experimentation with a wide variety
of percussion and simple instruments. Children are exposed to many different musical
forms and genres, develop active listening skills and express themselves through
music.
In the 5th – 8th grades, music classes focus on the components of listening,
theory and performance and students are given the opportunity to participate in
more sophisticated levels of ensemble performance, which can include beginning instruction
in guitar, keyboard, bass, drums or vocal skills. A portion of the class time is
devoted to learning a class chosen song to prepare for a school wide performance.
During this time students have an opportunity to learn a new instrument or further
their existing instrumental skills, to create a workable arrangement of a song,
and to practice ensemble skills.
