It was on the roof of the old building that early regattas were held. They
now take place in the schoolyard, in a wood-framed, tarp-lined race course that allows two
wooden boats to compete side by side. A steady breeeze is guarenteed by two large, electric fans.
Boats are matched by length, nothing more: kindergarteners’ boats race against
those of fifth graders, boats heavy on sail race against boats built for stability.
Everyone who enters gets a commemorative badge.
In recent years, the regatta has been complemented by a non-competitive Boat Exposition,
in which boats are shown, not raced. This was added in response to a parent's
concern that the stark competition of racing violated Fayerweather’s
tradition of cooperation and inclusiveness. After considerable discussion,
the faculty decided –in typical Fayerweather fashion—to make a reasonable
accommodation, resulting in the now very popular Boat Expo.
