In the spring each year, the Unit takes a four-day trip. Last year we traveled to
Washington DC and Baltimore. The goals of the trip are for students learn how to
interact successfully and cooperatively with other students, teachers, guides, officials,
and the general public. Students learn through exposure to new experiences and new
locations. If we believed that we could do the same kind of learning solely from
books and the Internet, we would stay home. Many of our destinations are linked
to the Humanities curriculum so that the visits will help history come to life for
the students. Examples – The Capitol will bring to life our discussions of how the
Legislature works. Highlights of the DC-Baltimore trip were visiting the US Capitol,
the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington’s monuments and memorials, Baltimore’s
Great Blacks in Wax and American Visionary Arts Museums and finally, eating a chili dog and
cheese fries at Ben’s Chili Bowl.
