At Fayerweather Street School we help young people develop the knowledge, skills
& awareness to flourish in a complex, diverse and increasingly interdependent world.
A very powerful and concrete way that FSS children are acting on an issue of social
justice is through the Mother Tongue Books project. In this project the children’s
writing is translated and exchanged.
The inception of Mother Tongue Books came from a very direct need of the Matènwa
Community Learning Center. Most classrooms and exams in Haiti use French as the
language of instruction, not the Kreyòl language spoken at home. The
MCLC’s mission is to teach children in Haitian Creole, yet they struggle to find
books for the youngest children who are learning to read. The students at Fayerweather
can easily connect with this struggle.
They are kids who want to learn to read, just like us.
Armed with this mission, the first and second graders shared their personal writings
with the students in Haiti. In exchange, we received books from the MCLC students.
The books were received with such excitement and anticipation that we are extending
the project beyond the first and second grades.
