Matènwa Community Learning Center is a progressive school on the island of
LaGonave in Haiti. Their philosophy is very similar to Fayerweather's.
"We want to present a curriculum where children don't just learn to read, write
and do math, but where they also learn to do research, think critically, evaluate
ideas, and discuss any problem in a way that will lead them to find a solution."
Last year two of our teachers, Connie and Dorla, went to visit and help at Matènwa.
This year, Millienne Angervil, a second grade teacher, spent the month of October
at Fayerweather. She came to observe and help out in both of the 1/2 grades,
but she visited every classroom and joined us on filedtrips and assemblies. It was a wonderful
experience for all of us. In February, Ed, our head, and several teachers will visit
Haiti again as we continue to establish our connection.
Together we hope to develop a close relationship between our schools through teacher
visits, sharing of student work and materials, and communication among students.
