The Unit Play
Director: Joy Lamberton
The Unit Play is an after school activity offered to the seventh and eighth grade students and is a culmination of the dramatic learning done throughout students’ time at Fayerweather. It is a three-month project that teaches students concepts such as mastery, collaboration, perseverance, and commitment, as well as the importance of a sense of humor and good snacks. Alternating each year between Shakespeare and other multi-cultural pieces, the goal is to push students to a new level. Students decipher sophisticated text by doing dictionary work and become skilled at analyzing the inner meanings of the plays. The play also helps them understand the complexities of a stage production since they are involved with all aspects of the performance: memorizing lines, designing and building stages, creating advertising, selling tickets, and making items to be sold as concessions. While it is an optional activity, the majority of students participate. Try-outs begin in December and rehearsals are three times per week after school from January through March. This culminates in three evening performances for the community.
