The Unit is the culminating experience at Fayerweather with a program designed
to address the needs of young adolescents. Learning experiences are dynamic
and vigorous, addressing the developmental shift to the abstract through
an in-depth approach to exploring ideas, concepts, people and history.
Students begin their day in a home-room base and then mix and move
about their day through different groupings and subject areas.
Through an integrated Humanities approach, students examine the themes
of Justice and Dissent, China and The American Dream using varied genre
of literature, writing assignments, group discussion, drama and independent projects.
Science includes lab work in Chemistry,
Heredity and Genetics, and Physics. Math is taught by grade level with 8th graders
taking Algebra. Spanish instruction takes place four times a week with emphasis
on conversation, grammar, reading and writing. Students study the arts through a
series of electives in Film, Art, Woodshop, and Music.
Unit students hold many leadership roles at the school: they run the recycling program,
host several all school meetings, develop friendships and partnerships with students
in the younger grades and take part in weekly community service projects around
the school. Unique to Fayerweather, 7th and 8th graders elect student representatives
to serve as voting members of the Board of Directors. Students leave the Unit confident,
eager to make a difference in the world and prepared for the challenges of high
school
