In 3rd and 4th grade, learning becomes increasingly multi-faceted, taking place individually and collaboratively as the children continue to develop intellectual independence. Integrated themes, such as Ancient Cultures, Brazil, the Wampanoags, The Human Body, Rocks and Minerals, and The Solar System provide students the opportunity to look beyond their own cultures and place in history. Students become “experts” and study areas of their own choosing through asking questions, researching and sharing their findings. Theme work integrates language and mathematics with social studies and science in relevant ways. Students also develop reading, writing and math skills through daily routines, such as folder work, journal writing, grade-level math groups, reading groups, independent reading, and Writer's Workshop. Curriculum is made accessible and open-ended, allowing teachers to challenge every student to extend their work independently. Homework begins in 3rd grade and students are supported as they begin to take responsibility for planning their time, and organizing and approaching their work thoughtfully. 3rd and 4th graders study art, music, woodshop, visit the library and take sports, weekly.  Spanish is taught twice weekly.
